IMG-20160808-WA0008Student of Department of Architecture Faculty of Engineering Universitas Brawijaya (FT-UB), Alvath Tembria and Agam Prayoga Brilianto, won the third place on the Design Challenge 2016 competition in housing and settlements organized by the Department of Public Works (PU) Settlements and Spatial East Java.

The competition, which is regularly held every year it is taking the theme Design Green Open Space (RTH) in the Roundabout Waru as the Gate of the city of Surabaya. The final round was held on Thursday, August 4, 2016, in conjunction with the Building Materials Technology Development Exhibition 2016 in ICBC The Square Ballroom, Surabaya.

After beating 41 other participants the chosen finalists are team from the University of Indonesia (UI), Teknoligi Institute of Bandung (ITB), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Parahyangan Catholic University in Bandung (UNPAR), Sepuluh November Institute of Technology (ITS) Surabaya, and Universitas Brawijaya (UB).

Alhamdulillah we were really happy that our concept accepted by the jury,” said Alvath when met at the Department of Architecture lecture hall, Monday, August 8, 2016.

IMG-20160808-WA0005“What excite us more is that the fact that we can presented our work in front of the jury in such grand event and can meet new friends from other universities and share ideas,” he added.

In this competition, Architecture UB Team sought to make the design not only as a green space, but the urban forest that promotes minimal use of pavement and optimize soil infiltration.

Then they also designed a space for living things such as animals and plants to make the iconic green city of Surabaya.

“We are inspired from urban forest designed by Ridwan Kamil in Bandung, House for Trees designed by  Vietnam architect, Vo Trong Nghia, and Foot Bridge in The EmQuartier Thailand area,” he said.

IMG-20160808-WA0007Alvath continued, the team maximize infiltration by simply adding the pavement on the site design by 1.8%. That small amount obtained for the entire circulation within the site design using a tracking. So all circulation is above ground.

Then, at around the site bioswale techniques applied to make the outer catchment for water coming from outside the site. Thus, it can filter the incoming water. The team also made a large reservoir in the middle of the site by combining the separate site by the highway into one.

“And also the water from bioswale brought into the middle towards the reservoir,” said this Mataram born student.

Department of Public Works hopes, beside as an infiltration area, the design on this competition can serve as a welcoming landmark of Surabaya and contain the ecological functions for the surrounding area. Meanwhile, the winner as well as the most favorite team of this competition is team of UI while the second place won by the team from Parahyangan Catholic University in Bandung. (and/mic)
