Professor of Architecture Universitas Brawijaya (UB) Malang, Prof. Ir. Antariksa Sudikno MEng PhD has just published his third book entitled “Theory and Method of Architecture and Built Environment Preservation “.

The Chairman of Architecture and Built Environment Magister Program said the book is a collection of research and study as a reference and input on which buildings should be preserved.

“According to the cultural heritage law, buildings that can be preserved are buildings over 50 years of age, have a value of knowledge, and are original and unchanged.  Then reviewed using other considerations as stated in this book,” he explained on Monday (18/09/2017).

The book includes 8 introductory research of Prof. Antar’ s magister students who examines the building of cultural heritage in several regions in Indonesia. Among others are in Bogor, Surabaya, Padang, and Malang.

“The old building is trying to be opened physically and is assessed for its strategy to determine whether it will be preserved or otherwise. Its results can be recommended for their respective city governments,” continued the Kyoto Institute of Technology graduate.

The book is important enough for the city of today’s civilization that still has buildings from the past.

“How the building is preserved? For example by converted into a cafe but still has historical value,” said the history and architecture preservation professor of UB.

Appreciation of the book has been showed by Malang City Government, alumni, and architectural documentation center who are interested to make it as a reference and the theory of preservation of the building.

Although the preparation of the book is not up to a year, but the writing and research takes quite an amount of time.

“At first I was hesitant because I was afraid that my book writing was bad, especially because I had to change the language of the scientific research into a popular language,” he said.

He hopes this book will be widely used by academics or those who love old historic and ancient buildings to sharpen the results of their research.

“If you can study everything up to the construction of doors, windows, so that the findings are stronger for the determination of building’s preservation,” he concluded.

The launch of the third book of Prof. Antar himself was held in UB Architectural Building, coinciding on his 60th birthday, September 14th. Prof. Antar’s first book entitled Integrated Architecture and Town Conservation (2015), while the second Preservation of Chinatown Architecture (2016). Both can be accessed at the nearest bookstore.

According to Prof. Antar, writing a book is a form of responsibility for his expertise in Architecture. He also invites other lecturers to actively write, so that knowledge is owned not only accessible in class in oral teaching sessions but can be transferred to anyone, anywhere, and whenever.

“On the other hand, I want to prove my consistency holding the principle of “Talk less, real contribution more’”. He conclude.
